When Should My Child First See an Orthodontist?
Many parents think orthodontic treatment doesn’t begin until the teenage years. While that’s often true, the first orthodontic evaluation should happen much earlier. Furthermore, a referral from your dentist is NOT required!
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist by age 7. At this age, an orthodontist can evaluate how the teeth and jaws are developing and identify any concerns before they become more complex.
Why Age 7?
By age 7, most children have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. This allows orthodontists to detect potential issues such as:
- Crowding
- Bite problems (overbite, underbite, or crossbite)
- Jaw growth concerns
- Missing or extra teeth
- Teeth erupting in the wrong position
Early evaluations help ensure treatment, if needed, begins at the right time.
Does My Child Need Braces at Age 7?
Not necessarily!
Most children who have an orthodontic evaluation at age 7 do not start treatment right away. Instead, their orthodontist may simply monitor their growth and recommend the best time to begin treatment in the future.
If early treatment would provide a benefit, your orthodontist will explain why and discuss the available options.
Signs Your Child Should Be Evaluated
Consider scheduling an even earlier orthodontic evaluation if you notice:
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
- Difficulty biting or chewing
- Front teeth that stick out
- Early or delayed loss of baby teeth
- Mouth breathing
- A bite that doesn’t line up properly
Even if you aren’t sure something is wrong, an early evaluation can provide peace of mind.
Why an Early Evaluation Matters
